A Caring Bystander
On a scorching June afternoon, a compassionate passerby spotted a small, injured dog lying helplessly in the median of I-10 and Sandario. Without hesitation, this Good Samaritan rushed her to a nearby veterinary emergency group for immediate pain relief. However, due to jurisdictional challenges, Hibiscus found her way to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA), where her story of resilience and courage truly began.
When Hibiscus arrived at HSSA on June 24th, her condition was dire. She was unable to walk, with a severely fractured left femur, extensive swelling, bruising, and road rash. X-rays revealed two pelvic fractures and confirmed the complete mid-shaft transverse fracture of her left femur. Despite the severity of her injuries, Hibiscus charmed the staff with her vibrant blue eyes and gentle spirit. They affectionately named her Hibiscus, a nod to her vibrant personality and the unfortunate circumstances that led her to us.
A Fight for Life
Hibiscus was immediately placed under intensive medical care. Our dedicated team administered multiple pain medications, antibiotics, and IV fluid therapy, ensuring she was as comfortable as possible. During the mandatory 72-hour stray hold period, our team provided around-the-clock care, hopeful that her family would come forward. Unfortunately, no one claimed this sweet girl.
A Ray of Hope
Recognizing the urgency of her situation, we consulted with the Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson (VSCOT). The prognosis was hopeful if we acted quickly, but the surgery estimate was a daunting $10,000-$13,000. Thanks to the generous contributions to our Second Chance Medical Fund, we were able to approve the surgery. On June 28th, Hibiscus underwent a complex procedure to repair her fractured pelvis and femur. The surgery was a success, and Hibiscus began her journey to recovery.
Community Support and Unwavering Love
Hibiscus's journey didn't end at the operating table. One of the VSCOT technicians, moved by her story, offered to be a medical foster. This act of kindness meant Hibiscus could recover in a loving home environment, away from the stresses of the shelter. Her foster parent diligently cared for her, even spotting and addressing a complication—an uncommon swelling near the incision site, promptly treated with a drain.
A Bright Future Ahead
By July 11th, Hibiscus’s surgical wounds were nearly healed. She still has several weeks of recovery ahead, but her spirit remains unbroken. In about six weeks, Hibiscus will return to HSSA for a final check-up and to be spayed. With fingers crossed, she will be ready for adoption, fully healed and ready to bring joy to a new family.
